Over the course of the last 30 years, computers have consistently been creeping into almost everything we use. Welcome to the new world of ubiquitous computing.

In short, ubiquitous computing is when everyday items such as automobiles, microwave ovens, fridges, phones, and televisions, are enhanced with integrated computers. During the first phase of this trend, items such as automobiles received innovative new features, such as cruise control and the infamous check engine light, where items such as phones gained the speed dial and call display. We are now experiencing the second phase of this trend, where these embedded computers are being connected to the Internet. This has provided us with televisions that can provide on demand content, and phones that can send email, photos, and backup your contacts from anywhere that cellular coverage is available.

Up until recently, the connected phase hasn’t really had an effect on the automobile, but this is about to change. Check out the following video, by Engadget:

The video interview demonstrates what is gained by connecting our automobiles to the Internet, in this case, using the iPhone as the go between.

Why this matters to your business:

During the video, when the check engine light had turned on, the driver was notified of the exact problem that the car’s computer had detected; afterwards, the iPhone recommended via Yelp.com, a list of auto repair shops that were in the local vicinity. This is the trend, as everyday items become smarter and better connected, they will not only tell their owner what’s wrong, they will provide recommendations on where to receive repairs. As a consequence, any repair shop or service provider without a well managed online presence, may become invisible to new customers that are in need of service.
