Teasing us with the excitement, the action, the romance, the suspense, and even the soundtrack, movie trailers are definitely one of the most genius marketing strategies in our day and age.
But how many times have you seen a trailer from a movie and thought it was going to be the most epic and exciting movie of the year? How many times were you disappointed? How many times have you wished you could have that 2 hours of your life and that $10+ back… Too many times, right?
The Trick
We’ve all been suckered in at one point or another to watch a bad movie based on an amazing trailer. Even the worst movies nowadays can be saved by an effective preview. This is all achieved by usually making the trailer appetizing to all different types of moviegoers.
How We’re Fooled
It’s all about organization and the small details. Even the most boring movie can look as exciting as Rambo and the most mindless action movie can look as elegant as The Pianist.
There are many ways to mask a movie by the trailer. Usually the trailer consists of the most exciting scenes, showing the best lines, also showing the biggest stars in the movie even if they are only in it for a measly 5 minutes. This definitely caters to almost all moviegoers.
The Icing On The Cake
The one thing that tops off a perfect trailer is the music that is chosen for the trailer. Music plays a big part in movie trailers. Using popular songs in the trailer will definitely catch people’s attention. While your listening to that powerful beat, and amazing rhythm, you are thinking to yourself, “I like this, I have to watch that!.”
42, is an upcoming biopic about the legendary baseball star Jackie Robinson. Usually a biopic is not the most action packed and exciting thrill ride that most people are looking for. Now I’m not saying a biopic isn’t a good movie, just that sometimes you find those really boring scenes that drag.
After viewing the above trailer, I bet you’ve become a Brooklyn Dodgers fan. Starting off with a low and quiet tone, then picking up with a banger by Jay Z, powerful, inspiring quotes and showing the intensity of America’s greatest past time, this trailer really makes the movie look like an exciting experience that will have your eyes glued to the screen the entire time. This just goes to show how effective trailers can be. The song, Brooklyn Go Hard by Jay Z, being released in this day and age, will most likely not be in a movie that takes place in the ‘50s. Also these are probably the most exciting scenes you’ll see in the movie.
Teasing us with the excitement, the action, the romance, the suspense, and even the soundtrack, movie trailers are definitely one of the most genius marketing strategies in our day and age. Who are we kidding though? We love the trailers and we love the way they keep us wanting more. We all will definitely go to a movie eager to see the intense ride to come, and leave with a frown and a feeling of regret. Face it. We all love a good tease once in a while.
